Student Council
September was a busy month for the Knights! We had science SIM field trips, school pictures, spirit week, lots of club meetings and more. The new members of National Junior Honor Society were inducted at a special evening ceremony. And our 4th graders got to spend time getting to know their 7th grade buddies in social studies. The month ended with Pie and Bingo night! It has been a great first quarter. Keep up the good work as we near the end of the quarter and finish strong! - Ms. Wilfert
This month Student Council had a very important meeting. In this meeting, they discussed Spirit Day ideas, Favorite Movie Character Day, Profession Day, Twin Day, Reverse Day, and Grandparent Day. Student Council approved the trip to the Music Instrument Museum on December 4th. There are more spirit days coming this year, October 6, December 21, March 15, which will be Decades Day, PJ Day, and Historical Figure Day.

I.B. Update
The aim of all IB programs is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. As IB learners, we strive to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. In September, each teacher nominated one homerorom student that understands and appreciates their own culture and personal history, and is open to the perspectives, values, and traditions of other individuals and communities. This student is accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view and is willing to grow from the experience.
The following are our September I.B. Open-Minded Students: Asher Norton, Lakshmi Nair, Layla Habeeb, Luis Uribe , Remy Thompson , Gavin Dzugas, Brigham Boyton , Chris Walker, Isabella Maceira, Taylor Falen, Asa Schmelter, Camden Walker, Shawn King, Luke Margalis, and Addison Wells.

What is open-mindedness? How to strengthen my social skills by being open- minded.
Being open-minded means, you are willing to look for and think about other perspectives. An open mindset is a belief that other people should be free to express their beliefs and arguments even if you do not agree with those views.
Open-mindedness is often used as a synonym for being tolerant and not prejudiced. People who are open-minded share several characteristics such as:
Open-minded people can fairly value experiences, beliefs, emotions, goals or arguments that may not align with their own. Open-minded people tend to be good listeners who strive to understand how other people perceive situations. They see differing opinions as valuable and thrive in diverse environments where they can interact with people with unique ideas and backgrounds.
Benefits of being open-minded
Being open-minded offers mental and emotional benefits such as:
Becoming more insightful about different beliefs, lifestyles and cultures in the world
Gaining empathy for other people even if you have little in common.
Here are 5 tips to becoming more social and being open-minded.
Be aware of your biases.
Consider the opposite point of view.
Practice generous interpretations

Think about the neutral viewpoint.
Our P.T.O. has been very busy planning and putting on events for Mesa Academy and we are very grateful. They closed off August with a Fundraiser at both local MOD Pizza restaurants and as you can see, our families had a blast. Our students, family, and staff had a great time enjoying pies, and pastries and playing BINGO on Friday, Aug. 29. Who knew Knights could eat so much pie? A huge shout out to all the families and staff who donated all the goodies and joined in on the fun. We are happy to share that thanks to multiple fundraisers PTO was able to purchase some requested equipment for Structure Activity Time and are looking at making more purchases for individual teacher and department needs. Please connect with our PTO members to see what else they have planned, they are a busy group of parents. Our annual Fun Run will take place on 10/25/23 this year! To make sure it's a success, we need volunteers. If you would like to pitch in, please contact our VP of Fundraising Chris Pantier at christopherpantier@gmail.com Are you looking to purchase more MAAS gear? Then visit our Spirit Shop which will open the week of October 16th-20th. Please visit our PTO website for information.
Pie Night was a huge success! We had over 250 people attend and had a blast playing BINGO and eating pie. There were all sorts of pies and pastries to enjoy. Our PTO and NJHS did a great job putting together the event and gathering prizes. A huge thank you to all who participated with pies, gifts, and their time to set up and clean up. Thank you to our night custodians. The night ended with a pie-eating contest and our winners were Luke M. and Chelsea R. Congratulations to all that participated.
On Thursday, September 14th, Mesa Academy hosted an induction ceremony to welcome our new National Junior Honor Society members. Each of the students inducted into NJHS has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Most students have also participated in Student Council, Service Learning, and various clubs and sports. They have and will continue to demonstrate their commitment to the guiding principles of NJHS, Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Citizenship, and Character. The ceremony included candle lighting, pledges and of course cookies to end the event. Congratulations to our students who were honored on the 14th:

Zaiden C. finished his basketball season with Poston and is looking forward to playing footbal with Poston next. Our boys did a great job this wrestling season on Fremont’s team by winning half of their games. Our girls have had an undefeated season as part of Fremont’s Soccer Team. Congratulations to all of our Knights as they head to City Finals!
SIM Trip
From August 31-September 4 this year, 6th grade students were able to participate in the SIMS field trip. This is an exciting opportunity for students to learn about space and the different jobs of an astronaut. Students successfully earned oxygen points by successfully completing tasks. They had a lot of fun on this trip and said that it was amazing.
